Welcome to my blog. I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures throughout the United States and aboard!
I hope you all have been enjoying the few pictures I’ve posted on Instagram. I am in the process of getting this blog in gear, please hang tight and check back often. Thank you for viewing my page…I hope to not disappoint you. 🙂
A little about me. I am a native Floridian! I lived out west for almost nine years after graduating college but returned to Florida a few years ago to be with my family. I am scare of lizards, I prefer national parks over city lights and I like to use the word “horsepower” whenever possible. Growing up I wanted to do a lot of things – cashier, veterinarian, truck driver, manicurist, own a wildlife sanctuary – I did not pursue a career in any of the above, I do manicure my own nails and I do continue to love animals (except lizards). I enjoy reading historical non-fiction, baking, buying expensive shampoo/conditioner and spending time with my loved ones. I am passionate about exploring the world and capturing memories through photography.
So what’s with Shoo Fly Pie? Believe it or not Shoofly Pie is an actual pie. People living in the Dutch colonies of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania started making this pie centuries ago. I have never actually had Shoofly Pie but if you have, leave me a comment and let me know what it’s like. I guess the pie is so tasty that Sammy Gallop wrote a song about it. The song topped the Billboard charts in 1946 and must have been a favorite of my grandpa.
When I was six years old, my family went on a vacation to North Carolina with my grandparents. I remember hanging with the grandpa while everyone went white water rafting down the Nantahala River. I remember dropping everyone off to white water raft and my grandpa and I eating lunch at Hardee’s. That evening I remember eating s’mores without the graham crackers and marshmallow. I also remember waking up that night in a pool of my own vomit (some adventures do have a down side). During that vacation my grandpa taught me the song about Shoofly Pie.
“Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Granddaddy, makes your Grandpa bald, and your Daddy say ‘Howdy.’”
You should google it, it’s a catchy song! However, much to my dismay, I learned way later in life that those.are.not.the.words. Here are the correct words to the chorus (personally I like my and my grandpa’s version best): “Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy, Makes your eyes light up, Your tummy say ‘Howdy.’”
That trip to North Carolina was not my first vacation but it is my first memory of vacation and adventure. So as homage to my grandpa and his humor, and my first memorable vacation, I named my blog “Shoo Fly Pie.” I hope you enjoy reading about all of my life’s adventures, and more.
